Uprooting and arriving in strange foreign land can be unsettling. However the best thing to do is to make an effort to integrate quickly in the culture of the locals here in the UK.
- Take the Initiative: Do not wait for others to reach out to you. Reach out to local groups that meet weekly or otherwise and connect with them Share with them about who you are and what have you come to the UK for? Find things or activities that you could collaboratively do together
- Don’t lose your heritage: While trying so hard to fit in, do not change who you are and what you stand for. Hold on to your values and spread your culture to others who might not understand it. It will also be a great tool to connect with the locals to share and understand each other's culture. Make an effort to also connect with others from your native country/ culture. Find out what they are doing and how they had managed to integrate themselves into the UK as a society.
- Be willing to adapt: Life may not be the safe as back home. You may be uncertain and will not resonate with everything that you see around you. However you have to remember why you made this move and you have to make this work. Be flexible but stay true to your beliefs. Adapting simply means making the environment work for you while you make the most out of your stay in the UK.
